Curated by Frédérique Cifuentes, Of Roots and Routes, is a vibrant exhibition and series of immersive events celebrating the creativity, resilience, and cultural legacy of Sudanese women artists working across the diaspora.
Featuring oil painting, textile art, installation, and with delicate traces of jewellery interwoven throughout the artistic dialogue, the exhibition showcases a generation of artists who graduated from the 1980s and 1990s. Many faced political restrictions, displacement, or exile, yet continued to create work that preserves and reimagines Sudanese visual culture.
"These artists are cultural guardians," says curator Frédérique Cifuentes. "Their work preserves memory, affirms identity, and ensures Sudanese artistic voices remain visible across generations and borders."
The exhibition features works by Omeima Mudawi-Rowlings, Fayrouz Omer, Aisha Hussein Shariffe, Nasra Mamoun, and Stefania Indelicato, highlighting the diversity, innovation, and enduring strength of Sudanese women’s visual art. Alongside the central exhibition, visitors can participate in workshops, storytelling sessions, film screenings, and talks—engaging directly with the artists and their creative legacies.
This project also raises awareness of Sudan’s threatened cultural heritage. Since April 2023, the ongoing conflict has endangered museums, collections, and centuries of Sudanese artistic history. Of Roots and Routes – Women Artists acts as both a tribute and a call to preserve and celebrate Sudanese visual culture in the face of adversity.
